Curriculum Event- In 1836, Texas rebelled against Mexico and declared themselves their own country; The Republic of Texas, or Lone Star Republic. They feared that Mexico would attempt to attack them again, so they attempted to get the U.S to annex them and make them a state. The Senate refused their offer. Again in 1844, they tried to get the Senate to make them a state, but where again denied. Then, they pretended they would ally with Great Britain if the U.S did not annex them. the U.S did not want to take that risk, and Texas was admitted into the union.
The connection is that when Texas was admitted into the union, it gained it's liberty, or freedom. It also gave Texan government a bigger voice in the U.S because when you become a state you get more Congressmen than a territory.
Modern Day Event- 4/10/14 In that week, A 20 year old dispute between a Nevada rancher, Cliven Bundy and the federal government, escalated when members of the Bundy family and protesters supporting them, blocked a road federal vehicles were driving on. Officers report a dog being kicked and them being assaulted, and they ended up using tazers. The dispute between the Bundy family and the government is that they (The Bundy's) have been illegaly grazing their cows, and Cliven owes over $1,000,000 in grazing fees. The vehicles had been picking up the cows, and the protesters wanted to know why they were using a dump truck and forklift. In recent years, the Bundy's protest has been attracting different "militia" groups from across the nation have been coming to support the Bundy's.
The connection is that the Bundy family has had their cows grazing on those fields for over 100 years, and they feel their freedom (or liberty) is being violated. They are also expressing their freedom of petition.
