Curriculum Event: The Constitution (Bill of Rights)
On September 17, 1787 the Constitution was created and on March 4, 1789 it went into effect after it was ratified. The Bill of Rights were proposed by Congress on September 25, 1789 and was ratified on December 15, 1791. The Bill of Rights are the first ten amendments on the Constitution. This Event creating the Bill of Rights, gives us certain freedoms, well after it went into effect. The Bill of Rights guaranteed or certain freedoms, these freedoms are our rights as American Citizens. These Rights include freedom of speech, freedom of Religion, and the right to bear arms. There are in total 27 amendments, ten of them are the Bill of Rights. These are certain rights given to the people that our government can’t take away. So basically Congress can’t create or make a law that violates one of these rights.
Connection to the ideal:
Our founding fathers wanted us to have rights and didn't want them to be taken away. If these were too be taken away for even one moment it would be every founding fathers worst nightmare for them. So this basically states that if such thing were to be taken away from the people it would probably not end so well.
Modern Day Example: U.S. appeals court finds conflict-minerals rule violates free speech
A U.S. appeals court struck down parts of a regulation that forces companies to disclose if their products contain "conflict minerals" from a war-torn part of Africa, saying it violates free speech rights. The lawsuit claimed that it violated free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment by in essence forcing them to condemn their own products.
Connection to the ideal:
This modern day example show that there is still cases of rights getting violated and in this case it was freedom of speech getting taken away from the companies. Freedom of speech is one of the amendments in the bill of rights and it should never be taken away from people. It is good that this case was cleared up because the rule was violating the different companies rights. Peoples rights should never be taken away or violated. Rights is just basically something that is given to you by the government which should never be taken away.
